The Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America (GNYC) has been following a directive from the New York City Health Department that youth overnight camping is not allowed in the city through January of 2022.
In November, The Greater New York Councils received a letter, purportedly from the New York City Department of Health, stating that restrictions against overnight youth camping continued through July of 2022. GNYC contacted local elected officials to determine the validity of the letter and to address any remaining restrictions that might exist. It turns out that the letter received in November was fraudulent, and all camping restrictions have been lifted for New York City.
GNYC will cooperate with authorities to determine who might have sent the letter. We are grateful for the support of Council Member David Carr, Borough President Vito Fossella, Minority Leader Joseph Borelli and Council Member Kamillah Hanks for their support. In anticipation of weekend camping returning to William H. Pouch Scout Camp, GNYC has announced a volunteer service day on Saturday, March 19, at camp to help the camp quickly resume operations.
